Clan Na Gael

In 1982 on a fine summer's afternoon there was a BBQ. Talk eventually turned to Gaelic football. During a particular intensive between a certain Young Ireland's supporter and our own Aidan "Gadget" Conrecorde the gauntlet was thrown down. The Yound Irelander made the statement that "there would never be a Gaelic Football club in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney" Now Gadget being a very proud resident of the "East" was not happy with this, and so made a bet (the wager never known although there is wide speculation) that he and a few others would get a gaelic football club up and running. At that time all the teams were based in the West.

To get the club up and running Gadget and Tom Leddy approached the Gaelic Club for sponsorship to sponsor a mens team for the year. The Gaelic Club duly obliged and that marked the birth of Clan na Gael GFC.

A year later the wife of one of the Clan men's team - Margarite Mullen, who had played for the Young Ireland ladies' team, decided the time had come to get a Clan na Gael Ladies team up and running. The Clan women won the championship in their first year and set the precedent of winning that carried is carried on by the ladies of today.

The fledgling club, encouraged by their success then decided to set up a hurling team. Clan na Gael hurling team enjoyed limited success in its 2 years of existence. In 1998 Clan hurlers led by Nicky Murphy joined forces with some Central Coast hurlers living in the easters suburbs and formed the Sydney Shamrocks hurling club.

Since then the marvellous Mal Murray (ably assisted by many fantastic people down the years) has brought the club along in leaps & bounds. Clan today has a mens & ladies team. They are the only club truly based in Bondi and are one of the most feared opponents in the NSW championship. We welcome everyone to join our club, be it either on or off the field.
